Getting a passport photo rejected is more common than you might think. The UK's His Majesty's Passport Office (HMPO) has strict requirements, and even a small deviation — a shadow, a slight smile, the wrong background — can cause your application to be delayed or rejected.
The Core UK Requirements
Your passport photo must:
- Be 45mm × 35mm in size
- Have a plain white or off-white background with no patterns
- Show your full face, looking directly at the camera
- Have a neutral expression with your mouth closed
- Be taken within the last month
- Be in sharp focus with no blur
- Have no red-eye or shadows on the face
What People Get Wrong
The most common rejection reasons we see are: glasses (no longer permitted in UK passport photos), shadows on the background, heads tilted or not centred, and photos taken on phones with uneven lighting.
